In search of a better life, the first Roma from the Romanian city of Fagaras, came to Wrocław in 1993. They first settled in the district of Tarnogaj where they built temporary housing from pieces of sheet metal, cardboard and wood. The illegal shacks in Tarnogaj were destroyed by police in 1996. Deported Roma returned to other Polish cities. In Wroclaw they organized several small camps. Presently, the grounds of the former allotments at Kamieńskiego Street are home to approximately 80 members of Roma families. Roma in Wrocław are a marginalized community. Most of the Roma survive only from begging or charity; rarely are they able to get even part time employment.
